The Sinister Sweetness of Splendid Academy

A mesmerizing read…a fantasy that feels simultaneously classic and new.”—Publishers Weekly

A pinch of Grimm, a dash of Greek mythology and a heaping helping of fresh chills make for an irresistible contemporary fairy tale…Deliciously scary and satisfying.”–Kirkus Reviews

Lorelei is bowled over by Splendid Academy–Principal Trapp encourages the students to run in the hallways, the classrooms are stocked with candy dishes, and the cafeteria serves lavish meals featuring all Lorelei’s favorite foods. But the more time she spends at school, the more suspicious she becomes. Why are her classmates growing so chubby? And why do the teachers seem so sinister?

It’s up to Lorelei and her new friend Andrew to figure out what secret this supposedly splendid school is hiding. What they discover chills their bones–and might even pick them clean!

Mix one part magic, one part mystery, and just a dash of Grimm’s Hansel and Gretel, and you’ve got the recipe for a cozy-creepy read that kids will gobble up like candy.

Ready to hop to the next stop?

Make sure you’ve read the above synopsis carefully because you’ll be asked a question about “The Sinister Sweetness of Splendid Academy” at the end of this let. If you are ready to move on, you can find the next hop right here.

From Flashy Fiction to Flash Mobs

What a weekend!

I have to admit, my life is so incredibly cool right now. Exhausting, but cool.

On Friday, I had the great pleasure of presenting a workshop to a SRO group of talented writers at the Houston Writer’s Guild fall conference. It was four hours of working on pitches, queries, first pages, and sharing secrets.

Well-known secrets, like where to find the best query information online. (I’ll be posting a page with links soon – this is a common question!) And less-well-known secrets like this amazing Save the Cat beat sheet for novelists. (You’re welcome, Houston writers!)

I loved listening to people read their first sentences, give their pitches, and wrestle with queries. We could have gone on for days – but the brownies I baked for the group (why, yes, I AM the best presenter in the universe haha) ran out, and we had to break for more chocolate.

Then, the very next day, I came home to lead THIS:

Yes, the very first flash mob (Zumba style) at Whole Foods. It was amazingly fun!

Tomorrow, I have a school visit at Brentwood Elementary.

I wonder if I can get them to flash mob with me, Gangnam Style?(JK)

What’s your favorite thing to do at a school visit, writer friends? And have any of you ever been in a flash mob? Or do you just stick to flash fiction?

Spooky Middle Grade Reads!

October is starting out amazingly well, and looks like it’s just going to get better.

That is, if I don’t get overloaded from all the awesomeness, and eat myself into a chocolate coma.

Today’s happiness is this: an amazing review of Sinister Sweetness by the lovely folks at Seattle Mystery Bookshop! “Dr. Who meets Grimm?” It made me want to read my own book again.

Friday, I will be teaching a half-day workshop for the Houston Writer’s Guild on queries, pitches, synopses, first pages – you name it! It’s going to be fun, funny, and useful as all get out. Spread the word! Walk-ins are welcome. (And, um, Janet Reid is going to be there, too. The Query Shark herself! You should ALL go.)

Next Monday, I’ll be doing a school visit for some wonderful elementary kids in Austin. That Wednesday (10/17), I’m doing a fundraiser/signing/party for the Dripping Springs Community Library at 4:30 p.m.

On October 20 at 11:00 a.m., I’ll be at the Book Spot in my hometown of Round Rock, Texas, for another appearance – this one with cupcakes, donuts, and marzipan!

A few days later, I’ll be in New York, doing this:

Yes, a costume party/reading/signing in New York. How cool is THAT?

I’m not even going to mention the Texas Book Festival on October 27-28. No, I won’t even think about it.

Nap time? 🙂

PS – Lizzy, thank you so much for your kind fan letter! I tried to email you back, but the address wouldn’t work. You made my day!

Interviews Galore! Nikki Loftin Tells (almost) All

The interesting thing about book-related interviews is the diversity of questions. I mean, who other than another author would even think to ask what’s in your closet? (Authors are notoriously nosy.) My husband reads my interviews to find out things about me he hasn’t learned in our over fifteen years of marriage. (He’s all, “Seriously, hon? You want to go to Nepal? Were you really that young when you got your first kiss?” etc., etc. LOL)

This week, I have three very different interviews up at three very lovely websites! Go and read them if you like. And if you have any awkward questions for me, leave them below! I will answer them if I can. 🙂

This Week in Nikki News:

Lenore Appelhans, author of the forthcoming Level 2 (oh, I can’t WAIT!!!), has the down low on my favorite things about my own book at her excellent site, Presenting Lenore. This was a hard one, like picking my favorite child. Which might not actually be as hard some days. I mean, come on – one of my kids is a teenager now. Batten down the hatches and all, right? 🙂

C J Redwine, author of the fabulous YA novel Defiance, has all my secrets revealed (including the creepy stuff in my closet) at her site, The Last Word.

And Lisa Rizzo interviewed me for the AROHO (A Room of Her Own) conference blog! Check out AROHO Speaks: Writer to Writer. And for that matter, check out their conference! It was a life-changer for me last year – and they even have a local conference in Austin this weekend! Totally worth going to.

Now I must dash off and try to get another five hundred words or so on the WIP done. I’m back to new writing! It feels divine. It’s a YA this time, for a change, and it’s got KISSING IN IT.

With ACTUAL LIPS.

I hope I can pull it off. 🙂

Small Signings

One of the things I’ve heard other writers fret about is the dreaded poorly-attended signing. From what I’ve picked up, this usually happens in a town pretty far from the author’s home, at a bookstore that either didn’t advertise the event, scheduled it against some major community festival/football game/shindig, or is a cursed venue for some reason (maybe they offended a zombie priestess or the local coven).

I know I’ll have one or more of these in my future. But recently, I’ve been a part of two small signings – intentionally small – that were sheer joy as an author to attend! Both of these were house parties, hosted by a person I knew well, and to which she invited her close circle of friends. People brought their own books for me to sign, and the hostesses provided a few more (which at least one of the gals bought from our local indie, Bookpeople! Yay!). There was wine, food, reading, signing, and wonderful questions in an intimate setting.

I know time is an real issue for authors (you see how spotty my blogging is getting? That’s for a reason, folks! So… busy…), and large events can seem like the best use of that precious time. But those are the places my friends warned me about – big, impersonal at times, and not at all sure to draw a crowd.

I think making time for small signings may be a very good idea! Want one-on-one time with your readers, and their parents/teachers? Try one! You’re guaranteed the most comfortable chair in the house, and you might even get a sidewalk chalk drawing to welcome you in!

Welcome to Splendid Academy!

Welcome to Splendid Academy indeed.

The artist!

The author and the artist

A Splendid spread!

A Splendid spread!

EAT! says the sand

EAT! Wait, don't listen to the sand!

First at the party

First come, first served! Hmmm... that sounded suspicious.

So, new authors out there? Every once in a while? Go small. (No matter what I said last week.)

The Coolest Things About Being an Author: HEB Read 3 and More

Well, wow! I just had another amazing week, so full of cool stuff I don’t know where to begin! So, how about… a list!

I do love my lists.

The 5 Coolest Things About Being an Author This Week

1. Fan Mail

I got my very first piece of real live fan mail this week, from a girl named Seeley, who called my book “extravagant” and who “instantly fell in love with it.” Best part of the fan letter? The different colored inks and the artwork. I have this letter taped up on my writing desk now, to keep me inspired through my next round of revisions. 🙂

2. Fan Fiction

No, not the Twilight kind. THIS kind:

A fan letter... and a fan's story. WRITTEN FOR ME!

I don’t know about you, but I think “Best Friend Magic” has Newbery written all over it.Thanks, Emma!

3. Fan Art

I was a featured author today for the H-E-B Read 3 early literacy program. I went to San Marcos, Texas to read, sign, and OH MY GOSH is that my cover done in dry-erase marker on a white board???

This made my heart so happy. I am also very glad I didn’t have to be there for The Erasing. That would have made me cry.

4. Fan Paparazzi Pics

Check out my amazing readers! Are they not talented, gorgeous, suave, sophisticated, and brilliant? Yes, they are.

Our very best sides.

One of these girls whispered "You're my favorite author" right before this pic. I am trying not to cry in it.

You are never too old or too awesome for middle grade fiction. Some of my favorite people in the world!

This is me with Rockstar Librarian Priscilla Delgado. Oh, and some guy who I think might be the Mayor of San Marcos. (Daniel Guerrero!)

5. Gift Baskets Full of Chocolate

You people know how I feel about chocolate. Well, apparently, the folks at H-E-B (Paul Mejia, in particular, the mastermind behind this AMAZING event), know as well. So they sent me home with this:

YES! Revision supplies! I am saved!

Honestly, I can’t say enough good things about the people who put on this event, or the reason for it – to get books into the hands of disadvantaged kids, and to encourage parents to read with their kids three times a week – or more.

Thank you to H-E-B, Paul Mejia, Helia, and all the friends and San Marcos ISD folks who came out!

Write Big or Go Home

I have a guest post up today on the excellent Adventures in YA and Children’s Publishing blog. It talks about my launch party and “writing with edge.” Also, the best advice I got from the phenomenal Cynthia Leitich Smith. Go check it out!

If you’re in Austin this weekend, come check out my totally awesome presentation on queries, pitches, and synopses. How do you make an agent/editor fall in love with your writing? It might take a little mood music and champagne, metaphorically speaking. (Bow chicka bow wow…)

I also got very excited about this Shelf Awareness review. I wrote a “smart, enchanting book.” How cool is that?

Non-writing news: I ran my first race in a very long time the other day with my sister. Only 5K, and we may have stopped and started, but it was fun! If you’ve ever tried running alone, don’t bother. It’s only fun with a friend!

Then Dave and I took the kids to skate/ride bikes at the Austin Veloway. Followed immediately by a trip to Jumpoline Park, an old Wal-Mart converted into an entire warehouse full of trampolines. It was so much fun… we’re totally going back, as soon as the pain stops from last time. (Note to self: you are too old to do standing front flips on a trampoline. Don’t do it ever again.)

Oh, and now I have to go mail four copies of a contract off to my agent. Yep, you heard it: I’ve signed another contract, for a third middle-grade book with Razorbill! I may be doing this writing thing for a while…

Have a wonderful week, Writer Friends! And write something better than the poem I cranked out on Monday. Seriously, a love poem about Texas? I need to get back to the fairy tales. 🙂

Places to Win my Book!

Hi, Friends!

Well, I’m as busy as a bee these days – and I haven’t forgotten I promised you pictures of the Big Launch. But you may have to wait. SO MUCH TO DO.

I’m doing a talk on queries, pitches, and synopses at the local SCBWI monthly meeting on September 8, 10 a.m.

Then, the following Saturday, I’m doing this!

Cool, huh? I get to read to kids, and support an amazing literacy initiative!

In addition to these things, I’m writing guest blogs and trying to remember to pick my kids up from the bus stop. Hey, I remembered one of them today, so that’s good, right?

Never mind. So, anyway, in the Land of Free Things… places to win my book this week include:

The Mother and Daughter Reading Team blog! (Um, there are NO entries yet here. So, I would think GO HERE FIRST!)

YA Reads!

I Read Banned Books!

So, what are you waiting for? Go win free books!

(And I’d like to wish a wonderful launch week to Apocalypsie Claire Legrand, author of The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls, one of my favorite MG reads of the year! Read it now, unless you’re phobic of bugs, in which case DO NOT. Happy Book Birthday, Claire!)

Sinister Sweetness Book Trailer Premiere!

I’m thrilled to announce that the amazing and lovely Jen Bigheart from I Read Banned Books is hosting the premiere of my book trailer today! I would love for you to hop over to her blog, check it out, and let me know what you think! Or just watch it and wonder at what sort of twisted soul would write something like this for small, defenseless children. Whichever.

And the launch party was amazing, by the way. Over 200 people, friends from my elementary years to now, sweets until the world might end, and kids who asked the best questions ever. So much fun. I’ll post pictures later in the week! Thanks again to Bookpeople for hosting on Saturday – and Jen for hosting me today!
